The Intelligent Spectral Gamma tool measures the naturally occurring radioactivity of the formation and produces full gamma ray spectroscopy in 256–channel spectrum. The total gamma ray spectra measured is solved into the three most common components of naturally occurring radiation in sands and shales – potassium, uranium and thorium (K, U and Th) respectively. These data are used to distinguish important features of the clay or sand around the wellbore and help in determining the total organic carbon (TOC) content, clay type analysis, heavy mineral detection, and fracture detection. Two large scintillation detectors are used to improve sensitivity and efficiency and the tool is sourceless with proprietary spectrum stabilization technology. It is home of a centralized memory storage system up to 40Gbytes.
